Alcohol Can Be as Devastating as Hard, Illegal Drugs
For most people, a few drinks during social get-togethers is no problem. For others, alcohol is addictive, just like a drug.
There are many people who will argue with this statement, but alcohol fits all the definitions of a harmful and addictive drug and alcohol can be as dangerous as illegal, hard drugs.
When someone is addicted to alcohol:
1. They need to drink more and more of it to get the same effect
2. Their body becomes physically dependent on alcohol.
3. They become mentally and emotionally depend on alcohol just to make it through the day
4. People can die from alcohol abuse
Alcoholism is permanent, it cannot be cured. An ex-alcoholic is identified as someone who has not had a drink for a long time. If the ex-alcoholic has even one drink, they are an alcoholic again and have to go through the whole drying out process one more time.
Alcoholism treatment centers allow the alcoholic to live in a supportive and alcohol-free environment while they give up their drug of choice.
There is psychological advice available and they engage in group therapy sessions that will help while they are recovering.
Alcoholics Anonymous has support meetings for alcoholics in most towns and cities in other Countries around the world. Many recovering alcoholics find these group sessions to be a necessary part of remaining a recovered alcoholic.
Considering how toxic alcohol is, by nature, if the substance was introduced today, it would never be licensed and approved for public consumption. It is because of the wide reach of alcohol industry and the fact that so many jobs depend on it that has made it politically unacceptable to ban alcohol, again.
Alcohol kills many people on a daily basis and it can also destroy the lives of those who have to deal with an alcoholic.
